There are approximately 19,490,297 people living in New York. I am sure that tens of thousands of these people leave the state every day- on a business trip, vacation, wedding, etc. But, why is it that school never seems emptier? Why is there still an endless amount of people in Times Square? Why can you still not succeed in finding a seat on the train? Why is it that we never notice these people missing? Well, the obvious answer is. “Of course, the same way people leave the state there are other people that come to visit.” Sure, I suppose this is correct. But, the point that I am trying to convey is much more deeper than that. See, what I am trying to say is that with all the goddamn people in this overpopulated state, you never really notice the people leaving until someone you care about is gone. Suddenly, Times Square seems empty, the bus is deserted, and with all the rude, sycophant or perhaps pleasant people surrounding you… you still manage to feel alone. How is it that ONE person can make that much of a difference on some one’s life? How can you miss someone so much that their absence is enough to completely alter the perspective you have on the people around you? What if the feelings you have for this person aren’t returned? It’s quite possibly the worst thing ever. You still miss them and you’re sort of tormented by the fact that they don’t care enough to miss you back. Worrying about who they are with and convincing yourself that they’ll soon “open their eyes.” The worse thing you can possibly do is tell yourself, “I don’t care. From this moment on I will not like them anymore.” You can will yourself not to show feelings for someone and try not to think about them. But at the end of the day, no matter how hard you try, you can’t control how you feel. We’ll do what we feel is best even if it hurts us in the long run. Yes, it sucks but that is the burden that comes along with caring about someone. This burden, for example, is like having wings. They weigh us down but it is that same burden which enables us to fly. And with this I say, New York’s population is 19,490,297… minus one. I’m waiting for New York to have that full feeling again. I miss you.
